I’ve had some of the greatest moments of my life in trees, so when I heard that Charlie Keller, Evergreen 4th grade associate teacher, made a new year’s resolution to climb a different tree every day, I decided to interview him.
How did you come to Evergreen? How did you hear about us?
I came to Evergreen because I moved to Asheville completely on a whim. My job ran up down in Charleston; it was a seasonal job. So, I came up here with a friend one weekend and decided to move in to a house with some friends. I started looking for jobs in the field of Environmental education because that’s what I did down in Charleston. I inadvertently stumbled upon Evergreen and got the job as an associate.
So, what was your resolution?
Last year, 2010, I made a new year’s resolution to climb a different tree every day of the year….. That was the original resolution; that was my plan anyway.
What made you decide to make that New Year’s resolution?
New Year’s Eve… (Laugh) I was in a cabin with a lot of good friends and I climbed a couple trees, me and my good friend Asher decided that we were going to do it every day; we were going to climb a different tree every day. I don’t know, a lot of people make New Year’s resolutions of something to give up in their life and I think that’s kind of silly…. Giving things up…. So, I decided to add something to my life.
So, you said it didn’t really work out?
(Laugh) I made it until June 15; almost 6 months. In the last few weeks, it just turned into kind of a hassle. It became more of an obligation than a passion. On the last day, it was like 11:45 pm and I had forgotten to climb a tree. I was already getting into bed and it was raining outside, so I decided to throw in the towel and call it quits.
